It’s the first photo challenge of 2015, and the theme is “new.” Cliché? Perhaps, but clichés develop for a reason. For many of us, the year’s beginning is time to take stock of the past and plan for the future; this week, let’s get excited about those plans by celebrating what’s new.
As long as we’re trafficking in clichés, what says “new” or represents possibility better than an adorable six-month-old? (And make no mistake, this is one cute baby.) During my family’s Christmas celebrations, I got to meet my new grand-nephew for the first time.

Once my blood pressure recovered from the shock of realizing that I have a grand-nephew, I reveled in his wide, gummy smile and reactions to all the newness around him. Everything is a discovery. Everything is filled with potential. There are no preconceived notions, no self-imposed limitations: everything is open for exploration (subject only, perhaps, to some parental restraints before baby goes head-first over the sofa or tries to share the cat’s dinner).
Use your photo this week to show us something new-to-you for 2015. It could be a photo that tells us something about your dreams: a place you hope to travel. Something that represents a new goal you’d like to reach — the house you’re saving up for, the gates of a school you’d like to attend, the cover of a magazine you’d love to publish in. Highlight a new person in your life, and all the possibility that relationships contain. Or keep things lower-key, with an image of an favorite gift you received, an inspiring book you just started reading, your new puppy, or the hiking trail you hope to master.
New year. New opportunities. New adventures. Let’s inspire one another — show us what’s new.
