Scale

Last week, I was lucky enough to find myself in New Orleans. I got an extra shot of luck when I found the baby in the King Cake, making me king for the day.

I promptly named my new charge Henri, and we embarked on a whirlwind tour of New Orleans’ French Quarter — wandering through Jackson Square, eating beignets, and staking out a seat for the evening’s Mardi Gras parade:

It’s always easy to get a good seat when you’re barely two inches tall.

I had a lot of fun (too much, some might say) playing with Henri’s scale. A park bench dwarfed himHe was huge in a margarita glass. An old dollhouse spotted at an artist’s workshop proved to be just right.

This week, play with scale. Insert something into a scene to highlight size: your two-year-old in a field of flowers. A dime next to the huge cinnamon roll you picked up at the bakery. Shoot the giant pile of laundry making your couch look tiny by comparison.* Snap a picture of naturally occurring elements, like a Great Dane and Chihuahua together at the dog run. Share a photo from an airplane window showing us the plane’s engine against the ant-like background of the ground below.

Or, of course, you can wander around town taking photos of a tiny plastic baby. Whatever you decide, the word for this week is scale.

*Possibly this is just something occurring in my apartment at the moment; you’re probably much neater than I am.
